Xu Tang's cover design for the 13th edition of the Anthropology Chinese Textbook, published in September 2023 in Beijing, has earned the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for its minimalist yet powerful visual blending of Eastern and Western cultural symbols, symbolizing human evolution and academic excellence.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Xu Tang's latest cover for the Anthropology Chinese Textbook stands out for its creative integration of the letter "A" and the Chinese character for "human," visually merging an ape's leg with that of a modern human. This striking image not only references the evolution of mankind but also symbolizes the convergence of Western scientific tradition and Eastern philosophical heritage. The design, realized with specialty paper, black ink, and gold foil stamping, was officially published in September 2023 in Beijing and has quickly garnered recognition for its visual clarity and academic gravitas.
The project began in June 2023 and was driven by a desire to break away from the monotonous photographic covers of previous editions. Xu Tang's approach was to create a memorable, minimalist symbol that would be instantly recognizable on a bookshelf while conveying the textbook's core themes-human evolution, cultural development, and the fusion of global perspectives. The gold foil stamping on the ape's leg adds a tactile and symbolic richness, representing both humanity's golden past and its aspirations for the future.
As the standard anthropology textbook in American universities, now in its 13th Chinese edition, this book explores research methods, evolutionary biology, and cultural anthropology. Xu Tang's design not only enhances the book's professional image but also makes the learning experience more engaging and accessible. The cover's simplicity and depth reflect the discipline's dual nature and the leap in human self-awareness, earning it the prestigious Silver A' Design Award 2025 for outstanding creativity and technical excellence.
