Chan Wing Ki's innovative board game "Cohesion," developed in Hong Kong and exhibited at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre, has received the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its unique approach to helping families overcome conflict and build stronger relationships through cooperative gameplay and positive communication.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Cohesion," created by designer Chan Wing Ki, is a cooperative board game specifically crafted to address the growing issue of family conflicts, a challenge that has intensified as families spend more time together at home. Drawing inspiration from real-life family dynamics during the pandemic, the game encourages open communication, teamwork, and the cultivation of positive values such as appreciation, harmony, discipline, and warmth. By engaging players in collaborative problem-solving, "Cohesion" aims to transform negative interactions into opportunities for growth and understanding.
The gameplay centers around players working together to resolve conflicts represented by cards, using value and event cards to promote discussion and cooperation. Each player assumes a unique role, and the group must communicate-without revealing their cards-to strategize and overcome challenges before time runs out. The game's design includes 4 character cards, 52 value cards, 26 event cards, 17 conflict cards, an hourglass, a map, and 52 acrylic value tiles, all housed in a visually appealing package. Iterative playtesting and research into family well-being informed the mechanics, ensuring that the experience is both engaging and educational.
"Cohesion" stands out for its focus on fostering family solidarity and positive relationships, rather than simply reducing conflict. The game's scoring system is based on four subdomains of family solidarity-family time, atmosphere, responsibilities, and care-encouraging players to recognize themselves as a team. Research from the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society and feedback from playtesting shaped the final product, which has been praised for its ability to bridge communication gaps and promote essential family values. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes "Cohesion" as a practical, innovative, and impactful tool for families seeking to strengthen their bonds and navigate challenges together.
