Enno Cheng's "Daughters" Concert: Redefining Communication Through Stage Design and Performance

Enno Cheng's "Daughters" concert, produced by B'in Live, captivated audiences in Taipei with a stage design inspired by Wu Ming-Yi's literary exploration of language and communication. The concert's visual centerpiece-four independently moving square LED screens-symbolized the evolution of communication beyond spoken language, integrating music, body language, and text to create a profound and immersive experience. This innovative approach has now been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in Performing Arts, Stage, Style, and Scenery Design for 2025.

The concert's creative vision was realized through a collaborative effort, with a team led by Creative Director Crystal Chuang and Show Director Wenyu Shih. The technical design featured four 6m x 6m LED screens, subdivided and capable of vertical and horizontal movement, allowing the stage to morph in real time and reflect the emotional and narrative arcs of each performance. Traditional LED screens were chosen for their superior light and shadow effects, enhancing the interplay between visuals and music. Dancers incorporated sign language and Taiwanese Hokkien, further emphasizing the theme of transcending language barriers and fostering empathy through diverse forms of expression.

Overcoming significant technical challenges, such as ceiling load constraints and the need for flexible lighting, the team selected Fine Art 156 lights for their unlimited rotation, maximizing the creative potential of the moving screens while ensuring safety. The concert's program encouraged audience interaction, with music arrangements designed for clapping and movement, making every attendee an active participant in the communication process. By blending sound, visuals, gestures, and text, "Daughters" not only celebrated Enno Cheng's 15-year career but also invited audiences to reflect on the power of communication to inspire compassion and connection long after the final note.
