Lucky Bread Project Recognized for Cultural Preservation and Artistic Packaging in International Design Competition

Antonia Skaraki's Lucky Bread project has been awarded the Iron A' Packaging Design Award 2025, recognizing its exceptional approach to reviving and preserving the vanishing art of traditional Cretan wedding bagels. Developed in collaboration with the skilled "xompliastres" artisans of Marathos, Crete, Lucky Bread stands out as a unique, handcrafted gift that merges ancient symbolism with contemporary design sensibilities. Each bread ring is meticulously shaped and adorned with intricate symbols such as the lotus, dragonfly, and tree of life, each carrying messages of prosperity, transformation, and protection.

The project began in March and concluded in October, with the design and production process taking place in both Athens and Crete. Lucky Bread was delivered to 150 clients as a corporate wishing gift for the new year, encapsulating collective hopes and aspirations within its thoughtfully illustrated packaging. The box not only protects the delicately crafted bread but also features detailed illustrations and a leaflet explaining the significance of each symbol, enhancing the gifting experience and deepening the cultural narrative.

One of the key challenges faced by the design team was guiding traditional artisans to create new, intricate symbols out of dough, moving beyond customary motifs to embrace a more personalized and meaningful approach. The result is a product that bridges tradition and modernity, serving as both a celebration of Cretan artistry and a vessel for wishes of prosperity and success. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes Lucky Bread's ability to integrate industry best practices with a heartfelt tribute to cultural heritage, making it a standout in the field of packaging design.
