OJI OSAMU's U A I XR Workshop, officially opened in March 2024 in Izumi, Osaka, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative approach to making manufacturing accessible to all through XR technology, remote collaboration, and inclusive design, breaking barriers for individuals limited by distance, cost, or disabilities.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The U A I XR Workshop, designed by OJI OSAMU and launched in March 2024, represents a groundbreaking step in democratizing access to manufacturing. Situated in a repurposed 50-year-old warehouse in Izumi, Osaka, this facility leverages cutting-edge XR technology and smart glasses, such as the Apple Vision Pro, to enable remote participation in creative processes. By transforming traditional manufacturing spaces into digital, AI-managed environments, the workshop removes barriers related to physical ability, geography, and technical expertise, making it possible for anyone to engage in hands-on creation from anywhere in the world.
The workshop features a sleek, black-themed design and houses advanced digital equipment, including 3D printers, scanners, laser cutters, and automated photography systems. Users can access the space 24/7 via a custom smartphone app, which allows for equipment reservations and connects them with skilled technicians through the innovative "Takumi" support system. This seamless integration of web, cloud, and XR technologies fosters real-time collaboration, skill transfer, and the preservation of traditional crafts, while also providing opportunities for entrepreneurship and online sales of 3D-scanned creations.
The U A I XR Workshop was developed entirely in-house by OJI OSAMU and his engineering team, who combined advanced IT expertise with hands-on DIY methods to create a unique blend of innovation and practicality. Extensive research and user trials, including collaboration with individuals with disabilities and international participants, ensured the system's inclusivity and effectiveness. Recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025, the project stands as a model for accessible, sustainable, and community-driven manufacturing, revitalizing both traditional industries and local economies.
