The Subkayak D46, designed by Tamás Fekete in Budapest, has been honored with the Golden A' Design Award 2025 for its groundbreaking approach to kayak customization and performance, blending advanced composite manufacturing, 3D printing, and user-driven design to set a new standard in both racing and leisure touring kayaks.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Subkayak D46, created by industrial designer Tamás Fekete, represents a bold leap forward in kayak design, earning the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2025. Developed in Budapest from March 2022 to January 2023, the D46 was inspired by the dynamic forms of racing boats and sports cars, aiming to break the visual uniformity of traditional kayaks. Its two-section aesthetic, achieved through innovative use of form and color, sets it apart both on and off the water.
Engineered for both racing and leisure touring, the D46 utilizes advanced composite construction, including vacuum-infused foam, fiberglass or carbon fiber, and epoxy-vinylester, ensuring a lightweight yet durable hull. The design process began with 3D scanning and reverse engineering of a hand-built kayak to achieve millimeter-precise hydrodynamics, followed by extensive prototyping and CNC machining to create master molds. The result is a kayak that not only excels in performance but also offers unprecedented opportunities for personalization.
One of the D46's standout features is its integration of customizable 3D printed components, such as rudder hatch covers and flag holders, which can be tailored to the owner's preferences in color, graphics, and branding. These made-to-order parts, produced using SLS and MJF 3D printing technologies, allow users to express their individual style without compromising functionality. User research and feedback informed the design, leading to ergonomic improvements and a wider cockpit for enhanced comfort. The D46 has been exhibited at the Hungarian Design Awards and is celebrated for its combination of technical innovation, user-centric customization, and sculptural aesthetics.
