Cynthia Turner, a renowned certified medical illustrator based in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, has received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award 2025 in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication category for her editorial cover illustration "Emphysema." Commissioned by Temple Health Lung Center, the illustration was developed to visually communicate the devastating effects of emphysema on lung tissue, serving both educational and marketing purposes for the nationally recognized medical institution.
Turner's work uniquely combines 3D modeling and traditional hand-painting techniques to create a conceptual "inner space" landscape of emphysemic alveoli. Using Cinema 4D and Photoshop, she meticulously rendered the collapsed bronchioles and damaged alveolar air sacs, capturing the loss of surface area and elasticity that impairs respiration in emphysema patients. The design's atmospheric perspective and depth of field evoke the breathlessness experienced by those affected, while maintaining scientific accuracy through extensive research of radiological and CT images.
The illustration stands out for its ability to translate complex medical pathology into a visually compelling narrative, making the invisible devastation of lung disease accessible to both medical professionals and the public. The project was completed over two weeks in Turner's Florida studio, and has been recognized for integrating industry best practices, technical excellence, and emotional impact. The Iron A' Design Award acknowledges Turner's contribution to advancing visual science communication and her ongoing influence in the field of medical illustration.
