"Echoes" Sculpture: A Fusion of Nature, Art, and Sustainability Recognized at the 2019 A' Design Award

Kuo Kuo-Hsiang's "Echoes" is a striking public art sculpture that captures the essence of water's movement and energy through the interplay of stainless steel and glass. Created between 2014 and 2015 in Taiwan and later exhibited at the renowned UBE Tokiwa Museum in Japan, "Echoes" draws inspiration from the simple yet profound image of water droplets forming ripples-an ever-repeating phenomenon that symbolizes vitality, transformation, and the boundless potential of nature. The artwork's polished surfaces mirror the environment, inviting viewers to see themselves and the world reflected in its undulating forms.

The sculpture stands at 250 cm high, 270 cm wide, and 150 cm deep, meticulously crafted to evoke both the tranquility and dynamism of water. Kuo's innovative use of mirrored stainless steel and glass allows the piece to shimmer in sunlight and glow at night, thanks to integrated lighting within the droplets. This thoughtful integration of materials not only mimics the clarity and brilliance of water but also highlights the artist's commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness. By transforming ordinary materials into a new artistic life, "Echoes" encourages audiences to cherish natural resources and embrace the concept of sustainable growth.

One of the primary challenges Kuo faced was expressing a deeply spiritual concept through abstract form, selecting materials that could convey emotion and meaning. The technical difficulty of seamlessly combining stainless steel and glass was overcome through extensive experimentation, resulting in a harmonious and natural composition. "Echoes" is designed for public interaction, with dimensions and ergonomics that invite close engagement, making it both a contemplative artwork and a communal experience. The sculpture's recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation category underscores its creative ingenuity, technical excellence, and positive impact on public spaces.
