A gender-neutral public toilet has been unveiled at Banqiao Station, New Taipei City, designed by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan. The design serves as a key element in breaking traditional gender barriers, inspired by the concept of gender neutrality. Located in the main transportation hub of New Taipei City, the design aligns with the city's SDGs agenda for sustainable city development.
The 80-square meter toilet features ceramic tiles and high-density plastic partition walls, with air ducts installed in each stall to create negative pressure and eliminate odors. The toilet complex includes a signal indicator at the entrance to show stall availability, along with a large sink counter and a kids' friendly height mirror green wall.
The project, which commenced in May 2021, aimed to achieve gender equality through design solutions, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Overcoming challenges related to color choices, circulation, signage, and lighting, the design provides a welcoming atmosphere for all users. The green wall at the mirror utilizes gray water from the sink for sustainable water usage.
