Hsiao-Wen Hu's "Action Means Everything" Campaign Poster
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hsiao-Wen Hu, a designer from Queens, USA, has created a thought-provoking campaign poster titled "Action Means Everything." Inspired by the events of 2020, the poster serves as a reminder of the importance of taking action in the face of challenges. The design advocates the significance of actions over empty promises, aiming to make people notice the changes and empowerment brought by active participation.
The campaign proposal advocates the importance of actions over empty promises, making people notice the changes and empowerment brought by active participation. The visual design of the campaign takes inspiration from protest arts, translating platitudinous phrases into lively and straightforward narratives. The bright color palette is intended to bring positivity and freshness to viewers.
The design process started as a brainstorm of keywords and spontaneous sketches of them. For the posters to be as relevant and relatable to the viewer as possible, the designer began her design process with hand-drawn sketches of body figures. She took references from comic illustrations and protest arts, taking the sketches into computer software, and integrated typography into the narratives to better communicate the ideas.
This project includes a series of three portrait posters in A2 dimension, a series of four posters in square dimension, one landscape poster for large outdoor banners, and a series of digital marketing assets (1980*1080px) for Instagram stories.
The campaign consists of three phases: first, the posters bring the idea of taking action into viewers' notice, and then direct viewers to share their acts in digital spaces and social media with the hashtag #2020ActionMeansEverything. By posting with the hashtag, participants have a chance to win designer goods as rewards for their actions.
The most challenging part of this project was to effectively visualize abstract ideas into narratives that are easy to comprehend. The research process involved an extensive search of all kinds of protest art and illustration style for visual reference. The key was to develop compelling narratives with a good balance of visuals and typography.
