Brooklyn Academy of Music Event Booklet Showcases Theatrical Inspiration and Creative Innovation

Ying Han has been awarded the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in Print and Published Media for her captivating booklet design for the Brooklyn Academy of Music's "New Wave" event. The project, completed between November 2023 and March 2024 and exhibited at AIGI Baltimore Gallery in March 2025, stands out for its inventive approach to publication design. Drawing inspiration from the dynamic interplay of theater drapes, stage lighting, and the movement of performers, Han's design merges classic and modern aesthetics through a thoughtful blend of sans and serif typefaces and the use of wave motifs throughout the booklet.

The booklet's most distinctive feature is its use of die-cut typography and lighting-inspired patterns, which create a sense of rhythm and depth reminiscent of the dramatic effects found in live theater. Each chapter of the publication is characterized by a unique pattern, carefully integrated with imagery to form a cohesive visual narrative that echoes the diverse themes of the event. This layered, immersive experience not only captures the energy of the stage but also ensures each section is visually distinct while maintaining a unified identity for the event.

Han's creative process involved overcoming significant challenges, such as balancing artistic expression with functional clarity and translating the movement of stage performance into a static, printed format. Extensive experimentation with die-cut techniques and lighting effects was required, as well as adaptive solutions to address material and production constraints. The result is a publication that not only celebrates the artistry of theater but also pushes the boundaries of book design, earning recognition for its technical skill, creative ingenuity, and contribution to the quality of visual storytelling in print media.
