Tokyo-based artist Yuko Suzuki has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award 2025 for her digital artwork "Changes Cycles and Shapes," exhibited at NEORT++ from September 24 to October 6, 2024, which redefines the boundaries between printmaking and generative art by exploring the essence of painting through dynamic visual transformations.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yuko Suzuki's "Changes Cycles and Shapes" has been recognized with the Golden A' Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design Award for 2025, celebrating its outstanding contribution to contemporary digital art. Presented at the Patterns of Flow exhibition at NEORT++ in Tokyo, the work captivated audiences from September 24 to October 6, 2024, as part of a collaboration with Right Click Save and Massage Magazine, with sales conducted on the Feral File NFT platform. Suzuki's piece stands out for its innovative approach to the question, "What is painting?", using generative animation to explore the interplay between figurative and abstract forms, as well as the integration of printmaking textures into a digital medium.
Created entirely using the Processing programming language, "Changes Cycles and Shapes" features 65 unique works rendered in high-definition formats (1920×1080 px / 3840×2160 px) and presented as a 25-second animation. The artwork cycles through multiple visual idioms, shifting between noise and linearity in both shape and color, while incorporating textures printed with a baren-a nod to Suzuki's identity as a printmaker. This fusion of traditional and digital techniques results in a dynamic visual experience that invites viewers to reflect on the transient nature of form and the continuous evolution of artistic expression.
Suzuki's research for the project delved into the experimental aesthetics of Hiroshi Kawano, a pioneer of Japanese computer art, and drew inspiration from the transitions found in Mondrian's paintings. By combining historical references with experimental coding and print textures, Suzuki proposes a new perspective on the materiality of art in the digital age. The work not only challenges the boundaries between painting and print but also prompts a reconsideration of art's commercial and cultural value in contemporary society. The recognition by the A' Design Award underscores the significance of Suzuki's contribution to the advancement of generative and algorithmic art.
