Yuko Suzuki's "Life Forms of Colors" Wins Silver at 2025 A' Design Awards for Generative Digital Art

JAPAN -- /COMMUNICATION/newswire -- Aug 24, 2024

Japanese artist Yuko Suzuki's digital animation "Life Forms of Colors," inspired by traditional printmaking and realized through coding, was exhibited at the CCBT x Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions 2024 in Tokyo and has now been honored with the Silver A' Design Award for its innovative approach to generative art and visual storytelling.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"Life Forms of Colors": A Generative Animation Bridging Traditional Printmaking and Digital Expression

Yuko Suzuki's "Life Forms of Colors" is a groundbreaking digital animation that reimagines the art of printmaking through the lens of modern coding. Created entirely with the programming language Processing, the work explores the process of color separation, layering, and transformation-core elements of multi-color woodblock printing-by translating them into a dynamic, generative visual experience. The piece was showcased on a 4m x 4m LED screen for over ten minutes during the CCBT x Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions 2024 in Tokyo, captivating audiences with its evolving forms and vibrant palette.

The animation deconstructs images into pixels, which then move, combine, and morph like living cells, embodying the Japanese concepts of "Kasane" (layering) and "Zurashi" (shifting). This continuous transformation symbolizes the cycles of life, death, and rebirth, as well as the fluidity and diversity inherent in human experience. By integrating the physical gestures of printmaking-such as color separation and overprinting-into code, Suzuki bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary digital art, offering a fresh perspective on both mediums.

Suzuki's research-driven approach delves into the micro and macro scales of existence, with pixels representing both the smallest units of digital imagery and metaphors for individuals within society. The technical challenge of seamlessly connecting multiple animation scenes was overcome by dividing the work into four distinct segments, later unified through video editing. This innovative process not only highlights Suzuki's expertise in both art and technology but also demonstrates the potential of generative art to redefine cultural value and visual expression in the digital age.
