Wu Yao and team have unveiled the Banov Store graphic design project in Beijing, completed in February 2024, drawing inspiration from the historic Ba Gong House and the Wanli Tea Road to create immersive, award-winning patterns that blend 19th-century arts and crafts with modern aesthetics for retail environments.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Banov Store graphic design project, led by Wu Yao and a talented team of illustrators and designers, transforms the retail experience by integrating the rich history of Ba Gong House-an iconic landmark along China's Wanli Tea Road-into a modern visual language. Completed in Beijing between January and February 2024, the project reimagines the architectural features and cultural significance of Ba Gong House through a series of intricate patterns and wallpapers applied throughout the store environment.
Inspired by the major cities along the Ten Thousand Miles Tea Road, the design incorporates unique city contours, natural landscapes, and dynamic animal motifs, all filtered through the lens of 19th-century arts and crafts. The result is a cohesive visual system that not only enhances the store's atmosphere but also extends to product packaging and digital media, creating a multidimensional brand experience. The patterns are carefully deconstructed and reorganized from Ba Gong House's architecture, balancing historical charm with contemporary appeal to engage and attract modern consumers.
The project's innovative approach bridges classical aesthetics and modern design, making historical culture accessible and visually compelling. By unifying the store's graphic identity, Banov Store strengthens its brand recognition and invites customers to embark on a journey through time and culture. This creative achievement was recognized with a Bronze A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2025, honoring its technical excellence, creative ingenuity, and contribution to cultural communication.
