Kolompeh, a traditional pastry from Kerman, Iran, has received a modern revival through the creative vision of graphic designer Sajad Izadi. The newly awarded packaging, which clinched the Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, stands out for its evocative illustrations that pay homage to Kerman's rich history of celebration and artistry. The design features characters reminiscent of Kerman's ancestors, adorned in Persian patterns, capturing the spirit of local gatherings and festivities.
Izadi's approach addresses a growing disconnect between traditional Iranian products and contemporary consumer preferences. By using vibrant, sharp colors and gold accents, the packaging not only draws attention on store shelves but also communicates a sense of premium quality. The use of water-based coatings and food-grade wax paper underscores a commitment to environmental responsibility, aligning with modern sustainability standards. Each package's color is thoughtfully matched to the flavor inside, enhancing the sensory experience and making the product easily recognizable.
The Kolompeh packaging project began in August 2022 in Kerman and concluded in May 2023 in Tehran, following extensive market research and design refinement. The research team identified a gap in the market for products that authentically reflect Iranian and Kermani art, leading to a design that bridges culture, art, and commerce. Despite challenges in balancing tradition with modern appeal and ensuring consumer understanding, Izadi's work has successfully resonated with both older and younger generations. Since its launch, Kolompeh has seen increasing acceptance, offering consumers a health-oriented, energizing treat sweetened with grape syrup and filled with dates, all presented in packaging that celebrates Iran's artistic heritage.
