Yiqi Zhao's SoundSculpt, an immersive interactive music synthesizer inspired by the tactile art of sculpting, has been awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 for its groundbreaking fusion of spatial audio, motion, and visual art, redefining creative expression and emotional well-being through wearable technology.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SoundSculpt, designed by Yiqi Zhao and developed at the MIT Media Lab, is an innovative generative music tool that transforms the act of music creation into a tactile, immersive experience. Drawing inspiration from the ancient art of sculpting, SoundSculpt invites users to shape sound and visuals through intuitive gestures, using Bose AR Frames to capture head movements and translate them into real-time audio-visual feedback. This unique interface blurs the boundaries between creator and creation, empowering users to become central to the artistic process.
Employing cutting-edge XR technology, SoundSculpt integrates spatial audio, motion tracking, and visual processing to create a responsive, emotionally engaging environment. The system utilizes Bose Frames' gyro sensors to capture six degrees of freedom, mapping head orientation data to sound pitch and volume via a MIDI framework. Developed on Unity with C# scripts, the platform enables dynamic manipulation of virtual bubble surfaces, enhancing user engagement and fostering emotional regulation through playful creation.
Extensive research and user testing revealed that SoundSculpt enhances perception of spatial volume, sound, and motion, while promoting emotional stability and well-being. The project, which began in 2019 and concluded in 2020, has been exhibited to the Bose Frame AR team and recognized for its potential applications in art therapy and psychiatry. Overcoming technical and creative challenges, SoundSculpt stands out for its seamless integration of multisensory feedback and its ability to bridge the gap between physical and digital art forms, earning it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2025.
