Rotary Sans: A Modern Typeface Celebrating Geometry, Functionality, and Contemporary Design Excellence

Rotary Sans, crafted by Paul Robb and his team in Perugia, Italy, stands out as a modern OpenType sans-serif typeface that merges mid-century modern inspiration with innovative design features. Developed through extensive research beginning in late 2023 and launched in July 2024, Rotary Sans reimagines classic grotesque and neo-grotesque forms with a contemporary twist. Its most notable feature is the pear drop-shaped ink traps, which not only enhance legibility but also introduce a subtle organic contrast to the otherwise geometric structure, making it visually distinctive and highly functional.

The typeface was meticulously designed to support over 200 Latin-based languages and includes an extended glyph set, alternative characters, and ligatures, ensuring versatility for branding, editorial, and digital applications. To celebrate its launch, a limited-edition specimen box-digitally printed and finished with silver foil-was gifted to the first ten companies purchasing the complete typeface family. The presentation box, containing 20 postcards printed on premium 300gsm natural paper, showcases the typeface's adaptability across various print and digital contexts.

Rotary Sans's development posed unique creative and technical challenges, particularly in achieving a balance between originality and the clarity expected of a contemporary sans-serif. The design process involved an in-depth study of mid-century typography, with the goal of introducing a fresh, adaptable refinement suitable for modern branding and communication needs. The result is a typeface that emphasizes clarity, consistency, and a distinctive visual identity, earning it the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for its outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic excellence.
