Blossom, designed by Zhenglong Yang, is an innovative interactive video installation that merges Eastern philosophical concepts with cutting-edge technology. Drawing inspiration from the cyclical nature of life and the importance of mindfulness, the artwork features a Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (China rose) that blooms in response to a viewer's presence. This dynamic interaction encourages participants to reflect on the impermanence of beauty and the interconnectedness of humanity, time, and nature.
The installation employs a sophisticated combination of a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor, microcontroller, and TouchDesigner software to detect and respond to viewers. When a person pauses in front of the piece, the flower blooms fully, symbolizing the embrace of the present moment. If the viewer leaves or passes by, the flower retreats into a bud, visually representing the cyclical rhythm of existence. This intuitive interaction fosters a meditative experience, prompting visitors to slow down and engage deeply with the artwork.
Realized in New York City between September and December 2024 and showcased at the Interactive Telecommunication Exhibition in Brooklyn, Blossom stands out for its seamless integration of technology and philosophy. The project underwent extensive prototyping and user testing to ensure that the interaction felt natural and evocative. By translating abstract Eastern philosophical ideas into a tangible, sensory experience, Yang overcame significant creative and technical challenges, ultimately crafting a work that resonates with a global audience and exemplifies the potential of interactive art to inspire mindfulness and emotional engagement.
