Zhenglong Yang's "Nirvana" is a groundbreaking kinetic sound installation that reinterprets the Buddhist concept of enlightenment through the lens of modern technology and art. Drawing inspiration from the Wooden Fish-a traditional East Asian instrument used in meditation-Yang's work explores how rhythmic sound can foster mindfulness and spiritual reflection. The installation features a matrix of motorized Wooden Fish, each precisely struck by autonomous, motor-controlled mallets, creating a continuous, immersive soundscape that invites viewers to contemplate their own spiritual journeys.
Completed in May 2024 and showcased at New York University's ITP Spring Show, "Nirvana" stands out for its innovative use of physical computing. Ninety-six motors are synchronized via custom PCB boards and sensors, ensuring flawless operation and rhythm. The project's realization required overcoming significant technical challenges, including the development of robust 3D-printed connection mechanisms and the integration of CNC-cut plywood panels, each measuring 2 feet by 8 feet. These efforts resulted in a visually and aurally captivating installation that bridges handcrafted tradition with mechanical precision.
"Nirvana" operates autonomously, enveloping audiences in an unceasing, meditative auditory environment that transcends the boundaries between past and present. By merging ancient Buddhist practices with contemporary kinetic art, Yang's installation not only honors spiritual heritage but also demonstrates the transformative potential of technology in recontextualizing cultural rituals. The project's recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award underscores its creative ingenuity and contribution to experiential design, offering a unique, technology-driven meditation experience that resonates with modern audiences.
