Wylie and a team of designers, in collaboration with Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum and Communication University of Zhejiang, have launched the "New Fashion of Chinese Elements" poster project in Hangzhou, China, from July to August 2024, reimagining traditional Chinese patterns through modern design to preserve cultural heritage and enhance contemporary appeal.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The "New Fashion of Chinese Elements" project, directed by a team of renowned designers and cultural experts, aims to breathe new life into traditional Chinese arts and crafts by transforming classic motifs from clothing, silk, and ceramics into modern poster designs. Initiated in July 2024 and set for completion in August 2024, the project is a joint effort between the Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum and the Communication University of Zhejiang. By deconstructing and reinterpreting auspicious traditional patterns, the project seeks to convey blessings for a better life while making these cultural symbols relevant to today's audiences.
The design process combines traditional craftsmanship with advanced digital technology, utilizing high-quality silk and eco-friendly natural fibers to ensure both aesthetic refinement and production consistency. Designers employ digital tools such as Illustrator and Photoshop to extract, adapt, and visually recreate traditional motifs, resulting in posters that integrate the essence of Chinese heritage with contemporary artistic sensibilities. This innovative approach not only preserves the symbolic meanings of the original patterns but also enhances their market appeal and accessibility in modern life.
A key challenge faced by the project was maintaining the integrity of traditional culture while adapting it to meet modern tastes and functional requirements. The team overcame technical and creative obstacles by balancing cultural preservation with inventive design, addressing issues related to technology, production, and intellectual property. The resulting posters offer an intuitive experience for viewers, allowing them to appreciate the fusion of old and new through tactile and visual engagement. The project has been recognized for its excellence, earning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025 for its contribution to cultural heritage and creative innovation.
