Sliding Remote Control: Empowering the Blind with Inclusive, User-Friendly Air Conditioning Controls

ZHEJIANG ZHONGGUANG ELECTRICAL CO.,LTD. has unveiled the Sliding remote control, a breakthrough product designed to address the needs of blind and visually impaired users. Recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Sliding stands out for its thoughtful integration of a tactile braille display, intuitive sliding and arrow-shaped buttons for temperature adjustment, and a voice system that guides users through every function. The device was developed in Ningbo, China, starting in September 2024, following extensive research into the challenges faced by blind individuals when operating conventional air conditioning remotes.

Unlike standard remotes, Sliding incorporates a magnetic charging panel, eliminating the need for disposable batteries and making it easier for blind users to locate and charge the device. The sliding button allows for rapid temperature changes, while the arrow-shaped button ensures precise adjustments. Mode and airflow functions are accessible via a large, easily distinguishable button, complemented by voice announcements for seamless operation. The remote also features a dedicated voice control button, enabling users to manage air conditioning settings hands-free.

Developed by a team including Yuhui Xu, Jinghong Zhang, Menglin Xie, Yuxin He, Haiping Hou, and Xiaojun Yuan, Sliding was inspired by the lack of accessible and sustainable solutions in the current market. The project overcame significant design and technical challenges, such as creating an intuitive tactile interface and ensuring long battery life. Through its innovative features, Sliding not only enhances daily comfort for the blind but also promotes environmental responsibility by reducing battery waste. This award-winning design exemplifies a commitment to inclusivity, usability, and sustainability in everyday products.
