Hagata Farm Pickles, designed by Kikumi Yoshida of Kuuché Design, has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Packaging Design Award 2025. The project, initiated in 2022 in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, stands out for its commitment to both design excellence and social contribution. By using vegetables grown at Hagata Farm, the project not only delivers high-quality pickles but also channels profits to fund the cultivation of produce for local school lunches, ensuring that children receive fresh, first-class vegetables while supporting sustainable agriculture.
The packaging design draws inspiration from the hands of the farmers and the humble vegetable seed, symbolizing the dedication and pride of the agricultural community. The lid is adorned with green paper that mimics a vegetable leaf, while the deep hues and fine dotted patterns express the strength and vibrancy of the produce inside. The reverse side of the lid's paper features a letter of appreciation and the product's concept, transforming the packaging into a keepsake that forges a meaningful connection with consumers and discourages waste.
Kuuché Design's approach involved extensive research and collaboration with the client to capture the farm's personality and values. By minimizing the label and allowing the natural beauty of the daikon to shine, the design emphasizes authenticity and respect for the ingredients. The project overcame the challenge of differentiating itself in a crowded market by focusing on local pride, storytelling, and a tactile, memorable unboxing experience. This award-winning packaging not only elevates the product but also celebrates the quiet strength of rural communities and their vital role in nourishing future generations.
