FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tiantai Huangcha: A Fusion of Zen Aesthetics, Local Heritage, and Modern Brand Design

Tiantai Huangcha, the renowned yellow tea from Tiantai County, has received a striking new brand identity and packaging system designed by Kan Zhao. Commissioned by the local government, the project sought to encapsulate the region's deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and the philosophy of "Tea Zen and One Taste." The design uses minimalist geometric forms-dots and leaves-to symbolize the essence of tea, the harmony between humans and nature, and the communal spirit of tea drinking. The logo's arrangement of circles and a lotus motif visually narrate the tea's origins and the meditative rituals associated with its enjoyment.

The packaging itself is crafted from matte ceramic with metal handles, reflecting both natural texture and a premium, sustainable ethos. The tea canister's form is directly inspired by the logo, ensuring brand consistency and a memorable user experience. The set includes round and crescent-shaped canisters, leaf-shaped trays, and diagonally placed cups, all designed to echo the brand's visual language. The unboxing experience is carefully choreographed to simulate a Zen tea ceremony, enhancing the sense of occasion and making it ideal for gifting.

Kan Zhao's approach balances cultural depth with accessibility, using simple yet meaningful graphics to lower the barrier for recognition and appreciation. The design system is modular and adaptable, allowing for expansion into tea utensils and cultural tourism products. Extensive research into Buddhist symbolism and tea traditions informed the project, resulting in a brand that communicates both rarity and prestige. The project overcame challenges in abstracting cultural concepts and controlling production costs through modular molds, ultimately earning government recognition, media coverage, and the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2025.
