Hangzhou-based designer Kan Zhao has unveiled the new brand identity for Taishun City, officially launched in February 2023, which has just been awarded the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative use of whitespace, flexible visual elements, and sustainable materials, setting a new benchmark in urban branding.

Taishun City Brand Identity: A Modern, Sustainable, and Flexible Approach to Urban Visual Communication

Kan Zhao's Taishun City brand identity project reimagines urban branding by balancing tangible and intangible elements, drawing inspiration from Taoist philosophy. The design leverages whitespace as a core component, allowing the logo to serve not only as a distinctive city mark but also as a versatile canvas for showcasing Taishun's diverse cultural and visual symbols. This approach ensures the brand remains adaptable to various applications, from business cards to large-scale outdoor advertising, while maintaining strong recognition and visual impact.

The project, initiated in July 2022 and completed in December 2022, was developed in close collaboration with local government stakeholders who sought a brand identity that could highlight the city's name and accommodate evolving urban needs. The logo's structure, based on scalable vector formats, enables seamless adaptation across digital and print media. Its design features multiple versions, including simplified and inverted options, ensuring consistency and flexibility for different contexts. The strategic use of whitespace within the logo not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also symbolizes the city's openness and potential for growth.

Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the project. All brand materials prioritize biodegradable and recyclable resources, such as FSC-certified paper and plant-based plastics, adhering to the '4R+1D' green packaging principle. Advanced finishing techniques like matte film, hot stamping, and local UV treatments elevate the tactile and visual quality of the brand materials. The result is a modern, minimalist identity that resonates with contemporary audiences-especially younger generations-while honoring Taishun's cultural heritage and supporting the city's long-term development goals.
